Directional Drilling

Horizontal directional drilling is a revolutionary method of placing conduit, pipe, ducting and sleeves in and through areas where conventional excavation is not possible, not permitted, not desired or not productive. 

A drill stem with a GPS guided head penetrates through a "sending pit", is steered to a "receiving pit" using communication technologies between the drill head and the drilling machine. This communication is facilitated through a locater at the surface which follows the boring progress indicating location, depth and direction.

After the head reaches its receiving pit,  conduits/ducts/sleeves are attached and are pulled back through the bore hole, sometimes using enlarging tools to "back ream" the bore hole in order to pull back pipe(s) that are larger than the initial bore hole.

Twin State Utilities Corp. purchased its equipment in early 2016 to supplement its excavation-oriented utilities placement. In the process, more and more municipalities, home-owners associations and land owners preferred not to have their own properties disturbed by excavation. Initially, we trained our personnel and acquired all of the support equipment necessary for our own projects but soon we became quite busy drilling for other contractors, water and sewer departments, solar field developers and individuals who preferred the less invasive approach to utilities placement.

Twin State Utilities currently covers all of NH and most of VT for our clients. Directional drilling is becoming more and more popular with towns and cities who have recently paved streets and will not permit excavation. It is often used for power, telephone, cable, water, sewer, small drainage and sleeve  applications. Our equipment configuration lets us drill up to 400' and pull back up to 12" single conduit or unto 12" in multiple conduits ie. three 4" pipes.
